¼ Dollar "Washington Quarter" (Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, Kentucky)
Obverse: The portrait in left profile of George Washington, the first President of the United States from 1789 to 1797, is accompanied with the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the lettering "LIBERTY" surrounded with the denomination and the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", initials JF in truncation of portrait., Reverse: A frontiersman gazing across the mountains to the West. Many pioneers used Cumberland Gap on their journey into the western frontiers of Kentucky and Tennessee. Inscriptions are “CUMBERLAND GAP,” “FIRST DOORWAY TO THE WEST,” “KENTUCKY,” “2016” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”

She is holding a book, which represents her work as an author as well as her successful activism for Native American rights. Behind her, a stylized sun represents her work on The Sun Dance Opera, while a cardinal symbolizes her name, which translates to “Red Bird.” A Yankton Sioux-inspired diamond pattern sits underneath the sun.
