Obverse: The "Flowing Hair" Liberty head on the right, and the vintage. This design was not well received by the public, as flowing hair was considered daring for its time., Reverse: The face value (in words and fractions) surrounded by a chain. This design wasn't well received either, as the chain didn't give the impression of freedom. That's why it was later replaced by a plant crown.

Obverse: The portrait in left profile of George Washington, the first President of the United States from 1789 to 1797, is accompanied with the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the lettering "LIBERTY" and it is surrounded with the face value and the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", Reverse: Musical instruments and score with the inscription "Musical Heritage." Three stars represent Tennessee's three regions and the instruments symbolize each region's distinct musical style. The fiddle represents the Appalachian music of east, the trumpet stands for the blues of west, and the guitar is for central Tennessee, home to Nashville.
