Obverse: The "Flowing Hair" Liberty head on the right, and the vintage. This design was not well received by the public, as flowing hair was considered daring for its time., Reverse: The face value (in words and fractions) surrounded by a chain. This design wasn't well received either, as the chain didn't give the impression of freedom. That's why it was later replaced by a plant crown.

Obverse: Left facing Liberty head, tiara of olive leaves, plain hair cords, E PLURIBUS UNUM on scroll above with 7 stars on left & 6 on right. A tiny, leftmost leaf is opposite P & medium 1837 date below. The lower hair curl touches the neck and falls below curling to the left., Reverse: Wreath with a line below Cent. There are 4 berries outside the wreath, one opposite the first E in Defence and the last is tiny at the base of the leaf that points to C. There are 6 berries inside the wreath of which the last 2, one of which has no stem, are above and to the right of the E in One.

Obverse: American Mustang horse, facing left, bucking off a western-style saddle, behind is a rising sun. Inscription above and below., Reverse: Side profile, head of Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus), facing right, beak open. Inscription below.
